Volume 1 provides an introductory text and systematic descriptions of the illustrated pieces. Volumes 2-4 are illustrated volumes. Volume 2: The Romanesque and Gothic Period up to the onset of the Late Gothic period, c. 950-1350. Volume 3: Late Gothic Sculpture. Goldsmithing and Textiles of the High Gothic period, 14th-15th centuries. Volume 4: Late Gothic Sculpture (continued), Goldsmithing and Textiles, Renaissance and Baroque, Late Works (c. 1500-1800). Volume 5: Sources on Rhenish Art History. Only 350 copies of this work were published, making it extremely rare. It is in immaculate condition.
