Reddish-brown original leather bindings, with spine title, gilt box, fillets and coats of arms, gilt on the top and inside edges, and gilt edges. (Signed: Bound by Zaehnsdorf). - A superb copy in signed master bindings by Zaehnsdorf, London. With the coat of arms of Sire de Coucy's Subralibro and bookplate of the American collector John W. de Kay. The standard work on portrait miniatures. "The illustrations have been taken from collections in all parts of the world and represent almost every important miniature painter by some characteristic example of his work" (from the preface). With numerous notes and extensive indexes. Only 520 copies published and immaculately preserved.
