Slevogt. - Goethe, J. W. v.
Faust 2. Teil. Mit 510 Lithographien und 11 Radierungen.
Berlin, Cassirer 1927
Folio. 460 pages. Hand-bound red morocco binding with spine title and large title vignette on the boards, designed by Max Slevogt. In original slipcase. One of only 250 copies of this monumental work with 521 original prints, some full-page, by Max Slevogt. Presented here in the rare deluxe edition in red morocco. The "King of Illustration," once celebrated by art critics in Berlin, showcases Goethe's Faust II with congenial, type-space-busting prints. Page after page of this deluxe edition (each of the 250 huge folios cost 1,400 Reichsmarks), an original lithograph by Slevogt is combined with a longer or shorter passage of text. His pen interlaces the text columns with Faustian scenes, garlands, flower calyxes, putti, and ornaments, creating a unique tapestry of images. A flawless copy. - Söhn 814,1-527. - Eyssen, pp. 146-147 with illustration. - Rümann 25a. - Schauer, vol. II,84-85 with illustration.
