Schiller, Friedrich
The Ghost Seer. From the Papers of Count von O. With ten signed etchings by Ernst Oppler
Berlin, Heinrich Tillgner Verlag 1922
28.5 x 23 cm. 144 pages. Original leather binding with rich gilt spine and opulent cover fillets. One of 100 numbered copies of the special edition, printed on handmade laid paper and bound by hand in leather. This edition was printed on larger and thicker paper. The original etchings were individually signed by the artist. Ernst Oppler, a German Impressionist painter and graphic artist, was an early member of the Munich and Berlin Secession. Due to his enthusiasm for Russian ballet, he is considered the most important German visual chronicler of stage dance in the 20th century. Schiller was inspired to write his only novel, which remains a fragment, by the scandal surrounding the imposter Cagliastro and an essay by Prince Friedrich Eugene of Württemberg, in which he suggested that communication with spirits was possible. A flawless copy of the second Tillgner edition.
