The overall design of the work was in the hands of Henry van de Velde. Ecce Homo is the last work by Nietzsche that he was able to complete for printing himself. Due to the strained relationship with his publisher Naumann and his mental breakdown, the book could not be published as planned in 1890, but was only published 18 years later in a subscription-only edition by Insel-Verlag.
