Mann, Thomas

The Other Side. Issues 1-4 (Everything).

London, British Propaganda Department (1942-1943). 8 volumes. 32, 30, 32, and 28 pages. With numerous illustrations. Printed original brochure. In a case.

Camouflaged writing. The leaflets were dropped over Germany by the Royal Air Force between September 1942 and March 1944. Among other things, they contain texts by Thomas Mann in their first edition. Issue 1: Thomas Mann, Obituary for an Executioner. Issue 2: The Idea of Europe. Issue 3: The Apocalyptic Rascals. Issue 4: A New Faith. Issue 3 (leaflet number G.27/1943) contains, among other things, an excerpt from one of Thomas Mann's 55 radio broadcasts against the Hitler regime. These broadcasts were recorded in the "Recording Department" of the National Broadcasting Corporation in Los Angeles, flown to New York, transferred to another record by telephone in London, and then broadcast over BBC stations. The listener took a life-threatening risk. Carrying such pamphlets was equally dangerous, so they were destroyed after reading them – with the exception of a few surviving copies. A complete set of all four issues is virtually untraceable today. Very good overall condition. Issue 1: Stamped with the imprint "Enemy Propaganda" - Issue 2: Immaculately preserved - Issue 3: Cover restored - Issue 4: Immaculately preserved. - Potempa G 814.1 - G 819.1 - G 838.1 G 855.1
