"Buddenbrooks" is the earliest of Thomas Mann's major works and is today considered the first social novel in German of international renown. In 1929, Thomas Mann received the Nobel Prize for it. It was based on his own family history. The setting is his hometown of Lübeck, although the city's name is not explicitly mentioned. Sales of the book were initially slow. The price of 14 marks, very high for the time, hampered sales. Today, it is the author's most widely distributed work.
