Kokoschka, Oskar

The Dreaming Boys

Leipzig, Kurt Wolff-Verlag 1917

24 x 29.5 cm. With 10 original lithographs, 8 of which are in color. Original cloth binding with mounted cover vignette. - The Dreaming Boys represent one of the most important book art works of the 20th century. In 1908, the Wiener Werkstätten, which was also concerned with promoting young artists, agreed with the 22-year-old Oskar Kokoschka to publish "The Dreaming Boys." Textually, it is already close to Expressionism, but painterly still close to the Art Nouveau style of the Wiener Werkstätten. The edition, dedicated to Gustav Klimt, features vividly colored lithographs, fairytale scenes in luminous colors. While the work was almost unsaleable upon its publication, it is now one of the most sought-after illustrated books of the 20th century. One of 275 copies, hand-numbered in the imprint. A gold-embossed bookplate on the inside of the cover. Immaculately preserved. - Wingler/Welz Nos. 22-29. - Raabe 166/1. - Schauer Vol. II, 115-116 with illustrations - From Odysseus to Felix Krull p. 378 with color illustration on p. 314. - Jentsch 1. - The Artist and the Book 147.
