Klinger, Max

Rescues of Ovid's Victims. Series of fifteen sheets. Invented and etched by Max Klinger. Rad. Work II. Printed by O. Felsing, Berlin. VIth Edition

Berlin, Amsler & Ruthardt 1922

43.5 x 58 cm, landscape folio. Title page and 15 original etchings. Original half-parchment portfolio with gold-embossed title on the cover. In literary history, Lessing is particularly well known for his "rescues" (of Cardan, of Lemnius), namely, his restoration of the good reputation of a man to whom history has inflicted undeserved damage. The master assumes that the true reputation of several of Ovid's heroes has also fallen victim and undertakes to "rescue" them. In his satire, however, they fare much worse in such a "rescue" than in Ovid's work. The individual titles are: 1a: Title Page - 1b: Painterly Dedication - 2a: Pyramus and Thisbe I - 2b: Pyramus and Thisbe I - 3: Pyramus and Thisbe II - 4: Pyramus and Thisbe III - 5: Pyramus and Thisbe IV - 6: First Intermezzo - 7: Narcissus and Echo I - 8: Narcissus and Echo II - 9: Second Intermezzo - 10: Apollo and Daphne I - 11: Apollo and Daphne II - 12: Apollo and Daphne III - 13: Satyr. Deep black, burred prints on Japan laid paper. Some of the etchings have been reworked with aquatint and inscribed "Max Klinger" in the plate. All originals are mounted in the original mat with protective silk. Like all of Max Klinger's etching series, only published in very small editions and are very rare. All etchings are in original mounts and covered with the original protective silk. In perfect condition. - Singer 25-39.
