In 1917, Gustav Schiefler approached Kirchner with the idea of making the first attempt at cataloging the prints. Over the next few months, Kirchner sent Schiefler large packages containing around a thousand sheets of lithographs, woodcuts, and etchings for cataloging. The entire book design of the two volumes, published in 1926 and 1931, and the selection of the numerous reproductions were carried out according to Kirchner's precise instructions. However, only a very small portion of the edition appeared with the intended color woodcut on the covers. Volume II, in particular, is extremely rare, the remaining edition of which was pulped after 1937 by order of the Nazis. Printed in 550 copies on vellum. Immaculately preserved. - Jentsch 161.
