"The Stoker" is the first chapter of the novel fragment "America," which, according to Kafka, should have been called "The Man Who Disappeared." Kurt Wolff had sincerely and urgently requested this first chapter. Kafka could not be persuaded to publish the entire novel, as he considered it inadequate. Three years after Kafka's death, Max Brod published the entire novel fragment under the title "America."
