16.5 x 12.5 cm. 46 pages. Contemporary half-cloth binding with spine title. - The first publication by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, published under his pseudonym "Theophil Morren." The main character, Andrea, is a bon vivant, completely devoted to his moods and the changing pleasures of the moment. Returning early in the morning after a convivial night with his friends at Arlette's, his lover's, Andrea learns within a few hours what everyone already knows: that his best friend Lorenzo cheated on him with Arlette yesterday. The news forces him to rethink his actions: "Yesterday is, as long as we know it was." The inside cover features bookplates from Harvard College and the Houghton Library, both erased.
