Carayon). - First printing of the first edition with the famous illustrations by Delacroix, also the first edition of Goethe's Faust illustrated with original prints by a major artist. In November 1829, Eckermann showed Goethe two sketches of these lithographs: Faust and Mephistopheles on the Storm Horses and the Drinking Scene in Auerbach's Cellar. "Goethe was more impressed than enthusiastic by Delacroix's impetuous stroke, but remained entirely obliging: The draftsman was a great talent, he told Eckermann, who had found the right nourishment in Faust."
