Goethe, J. W. v.

West-Eastern Divan. Text revised by Max Hecker

Leipzig, Insel Verlag 1910

25 x 15 cm. Double title and initials drawn by Marcus Behmer. 262 pages. Original parchment binding with spine title and large central, orientalizing cover vignette in green leather with rich gold embossing, gilt head edge. - One of 100 numbered copies of the special edition, bound on Japon and in parchment. The book design was entirely in the hands of Marcus Behmer, who thus delivered his first typographical achievement, if not in his own type, then in the printing structure from the first to the last letter. Behmer initially rejected a special edition, but then devoted himself to its design down to the smallest detail. Immaculately preserved. - Sarkowski 612 with illustrations - Schauer, Vol. II, 45-46 with illustration of the double title.
