The Wolfenbüttel Sachsenspiegel

Herzog August Library Wolfenbüttel, Cod. Guelf. 3.1 Aug. 2. Upper Saxony, 3rd quarter of the 14th century.

Graz, ADEVA 2006

37 x 28 cm. All 86 leaves of the manuscript were facsimiled in their original format with authentic phylogenesis and edge trim. Every single nuance of the 776 colored image strips, all gold surfaces, and the graduated parchment tone of the original writing material were carefully reproduced. Original leather binding with metal clasps. - Enclosed: commentary volume. - No other book has shaped German legal history as much as the Sachsenspiegel. After centuries of exclusively oral transmission, it represents the first written record of the customary law of a specific area of application (in this case Saxony), as tested in everyday life and in court. Eike von Repgow published his work in the language of his Low German homeland, thus creating not only the most important legal book, one whose lasting impact remains unmatched, but also the first prose work in German. The consistently colorful illumination, the lavish use of gold on every page, the high-quality initials and capital letters, and the carefully executed Gothic textures make the Wolfenbüttel Sachsenspiegel a magnificent manuscript. Published in 580 numbered copies. Immaculately preserved.
