Melville Best Anderson (1851-1933) decided against all advice to make a new translation of Dante's "Divine Comedy," something almost impossible in English, and spent 28 years doing it. The editor, John Henry Nash, spent six years bringing the translation into a form worthy of publication. He began visiting paper mills in England, Germany, Italy, and Holland. At Van Gelder & Zonen in Amsterdam, he found the right laid paper and ordered it with his watermark. The parchment for the binding presented another challenge. The books were ultimately bound by Hübel & Denck, Leipzig. A perfectly preserved copy of this exceptionally beautiful edition.
