One of Salvador Dali's major works is the cycle of 100 color woodcuts for Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy." The work was commissioned by the Italian government to commemorate the poet's 700th birthday. When it became known that a Spaniard was to illustrate Italy's greatest poet, it could have caused a scandal. A total of 3,500 printing plates were produced over four years, 35 for each image. "These Dali illustrations for the Divine Comedy are among the most exciting and suggestive in the history of Dante illustration" (Wünsche/Tuchel III, 1-100).
