One of the most shocking collections of poems of the 20th century almost went unpublished. Alfred Richard Meyer was about to throw away the "confused manuscript" when the attached cycle caught his eye so much that he "cried out," as he puts it in his memoirs. Here, according to the publisher's enthusiasm, came not from theory, but from the experiences of the medical profession. "La Morgue" is the name of the famous morgue in Paris. The previously completely unknown author and aspiring military doctor describes incidents from the morgue in his cycle of poems – verses as cold as ice and sharp as a scalpel, repulsive and nauseating.
