These works were created during the first phase of his turn to etching in 1908 in Florence, then in 1910 in Berlin, and in 1912, with the title page in 1913. The sheets not only document his first steps in the art of etching (as Soltau assumes), but also demonstrate experiments in form. This, the first of a total of four portfolios of etchings, is also the first work for the young gallery owner and publisher J. B. Neumann. Behmer was a modernist at this time.
