Behmer, Marcus

The Prophet Jonah after Luther with twelve etchings by Marcus Behmer

Leipzig, Insel-Verlag 1920-1930

4-volume woodcut title page and 27 pages. Original half-cloth binding with red-printed cover title. One of 250 numbered copies printed on Zanders laid paper. The book was originally intended to be published by J. B. Neumann in Berlin in 1920. However, the completion of the etchings was delayed. Marcus Behmer: "Mea culpa! - Ten years after the text of this little book was printed, it can be published. That's how long it took for the etchings to be completed; (Eight of them were created in 1923, the remaining four not until 1929). The master press has since closed; J. B. Neumann, my friend, has emigrated to America. Peccato! - Peccavi! The etchings are now being printed by the Bibliographical Institute in Leipzig, and Insel-Verlag in Leipzig has taken over the publishing of the little book. At least what has been waiting for so long has now turned out well." Immaculately preserved. - Sarkowski 1269, - Schauer, Vol. II, 44 with illustrations. - Haucke 69. - From Odyssey to Felix Krull 3/21.
