Amman, Jost
Biblia ad vetustissima exemplaria nunc recens castigata.
Frankfurt, G. Corvinus and S. Feyerabend 1566.
Folio. (8),602,(63) Sheet with 125 half-page woodcuts by Jost Amman. Contemporary parchment binder. Immaculately preserved, clean copy of the first Latin edition with woodcuts by Jost Amman. The designs for these woodcuts are based on Johann Bocksperger's "Biblical Figures" from 1564. However, Jost Amman also provided his own illustrations in this Bible edition, some of which he even cut himself. The Bible with the images by Bocksperger and Amman has enjoyed widespread circulation. The interpretation of the prophets remained as Luther had created them. The artist's deep connection with the text is evident at every turn, especially in the Old Testament. It is a genuine search for a concrete representation of sacred history, which towers above the hollow pathos of later Bible illustrations. - Becker, Amman p. 10. - Hollstein, I, p. 37.
