When the Zwanglosen Geschichten und Bilder (Informal Stories and Pictures) were published in a small, numbered edition by Fritz Gurlitt in Berlin in 1919, this magnificent work was confiscated. In the numerous signatures on his prints, in the humoresques, novelettes, atmospheric pictures, sketches, and anecdotes, Heinrich Zille is a master of language, a master of Berlin milieu depictions and situational comedy of outstanding virtuosity.
